Chapter Nine

Athena’s adrenaline was at an all-time high. She rushed off the stage and headed backstage. Her heart was still pounding as it always did once the crowd jumped to its feet with their applause.

“Great show, Athena!” one of the stage hands shouted.

She grinned and waved while walking toward the door that would take her to the dressing rooms.

“Athena,” a deep, familiar voice called her name from behind her.

Her steps faltered, and she turned around.

Sorin.

He stood there, handsome as ever, staring at her.

“Sorin.” Her voice caught on a hitch. She knew he was very busy man. When she’d called him earlier before going on the stage, she had been a little disappointed that he’d disconnected the call. “Did you catch the show?”

She hadn’t seen him in the crowd.

Hadn’t expected him to show up afterward.

“Athena,” he repeated her name and strolled over to her.

A few stage hands scurried around, breaking down the set as they did each day.

He stopped in front of her, and his eyes searched hers. “I’m sorry about earlier.”

“That’s all right. I know you are a busy man.” She shrugged, trying to act as if it didn’t affect her. The sound of the click in her ear still echoed through her mind. She’d tried to convince herself that he hadn’t forgotten about her or maybe he was on a very important business call.

He reached out a hand and cupped her cheek. Her breath caught in her chest as she leaned into his touch. She was mesmerized by his dark eyes.

“It wasn’t done on purpose. I—”

“Athena!”

Laughter spilled into the air behind him. Olivia, Liza, and Nathan rushed toward her with excitement on their faces.

Sorin stepped back from her and slid his hands into the pockets of his pants.

“We’re going over to catch the Motown Show next door,” Olivia gushed.

Athena’s gaze flickered to Sorin. It wasn’t until they followed her gaze that they saw him standing near her. Their smiles slowly disappeared.

Liza and Olivia took in Sorin, and their eyes widened in shock.

“We didn’t mean to interrupt,” Liza said with a nervous chuckle.

Athena watched Nathan and Olivia exchange glances. She held back a chuckle. She remembered the first time she’d met Sorin; she’d sort of had the same reaction internally.

“It is no problem at all,” Sorin said. He moved closer to Athena.

Her gaze met his, and her heart raced. The look in his eyes almost had her wanting to do whatever he wanted her to do.

“Rain check?” She turned back to her background singers.

“Of course. The show is going to run for another month.” Nathan grabbed Olivia and Liza by the arms. “We’ll see you around, Athena.”

They waved to her with wide grins and took off toward the dressing rooms.

She faced Sorin and moved closer to him. “And you were about to say?”

“Come with me?” He held out his arm for her.

She looked down at herself. She was desperate to change out of her performance clothes.

“You are beautiful, Athena.”

She glanced back up, and his eyes appeared to darken.

“Okay,” she breathed. She stepped forward and took his arm, mesmerized by the color of his eyes.
